The Cleo Skribent “Der Gessner” is a unique, historical sketching tool that recreates the first-ever documented pencil design. Based on a 1565 description by the Swiss polymath Conrad Gessner, this instrument is more of a “lead holder” than a modern pencil, utilizing a thick graphite lead held in place by a simple wooden mechanism.
Key Product Details
  • Design Concept: It is a functional reproduction of the medieval original, designed over 400 years ago.
  • Lead Size: Uses a very thick 5.6mm lead, making it ideal for sketching, drafting, and artistic work.
  • Materials: The shaft is crafted from a single piece of native wood, typically cherry or pear wood.
  • Mechanism: The lead is secured by a wooden shim (a small wedge) that is easily removed to adjust the lead length.
  • Aesthetics: It features a distinctive finial end that resembles a chess piece and is often supplied in a jute pouch or a wooden gift box
  • Unlike modern mechanical pencils with complex internal springs, “Der Gessner” relies on manual adjustment and pure craftsmanship. It is handmade in Germany at the Cleo Skribent factory in Bad Wilsnack, which is known for being one of the few remaining “true” German-made brands.
